How Social Media Helped The Success of K-Pop

If BTS existed two decades ago, you probably would never hear about them. K-pop bands may be known in Asia, but they would not conquer the western market like today. But, thanks to the proliferation of social networks, that became possible. Social media websites extended their reach, allowing their music to be heard in Western countries. What’s more, their new audience loved the sound of K-pop. Now, these fans also turn to social media to express their devotion, further increasing the bands’ popularity.

BTS Butter

Since BTS’s introduction, they have released many songs – all of which their fans loved. But the boys are not done yet. They continuously prove to their fans that they can produce more great songs. On May 21, 2021, BTS released a new song titled “Butter.” They released the digital single through Big Hit Music and Sony Music Entertainment.

The song has once again wowed the world, fans and casual listeners included. “Butter” is the group’s second single written and sung in the English language. In this song, they showed bashers that they sound great no matter the language they sing in. Upon release, “Butter” received positive feedback from music critics who praised the song for its catchiness.

“Butter” was a massive success. It topped the charts in Asian countries India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and BTS’s homeland South Korea. Likewise, the song appeared at the top of the charts in Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Breaking YouTube Records

BTS has broken many YouTube records with their single “Butter.” It beat the record for the most viewers for the premiere of a video on YouTube. Subsequently, it also became the music video that got the most views during its premiere on YouTube. Reports said it had 3.9 million concurrent viewers for its premiere on May 21, 2021. The company confirmed these records on May 24.

Consequently, 24 hours after the single’s release, it gained a total of 108,200,000 views. That made it the most-viewed YouTube video in 24 hours. Likewise, it broke the record for the most-viewed YouTube video in 24 hours by a K-pop group.

The music video currently has more than 456 million views, making its success evident. Are you not awed yet? Well, how about looking at who they replaced? Before “Butter,” the music video that held the records was a song titled Dynamite. That is yet another English-language track by the K-pop band BTS. Meaning they are the only ones who surpassed themselves.

Success On Spotify

YouTube is not the only place where BTS proved its supremacy. In such a short space of time, “Butter” also broke records on Spotify.

Like on YouTube, BTS’ new single garnered millions of global streams. It amassed 11,042,335 global streams, breaking the record for the most streamed track on Spotify in the first 24 hours. The previous title holder was “I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber. But Butter beat it by 64,946 streams.

Their most-streamed tracks are BTS singles “Dynamite” with 829.7 million streams and “Boy with Luv” with 642.6 million.

By April 21, BTS’ music had been streamed 16.3 billion times on the platform. For that, BTS took the record for the most-streamed act on Spotify (group) from Coldplay. The previous record-holder only had 16.1 billion streams. Third in line is Imagine Dragons, with 15.7 billion streams.

BTS Dominating The Scene

“Butter” has broken record after record, but it is not the K-pop male idol group’s only success in 2021.

In March, BTS won the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Because of that, BTS is now tied with Fifth Harmony for the most Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards won by a music group. Both of them have five wins under their belts.

Next, on April 10, “Dynamite” broke the record at No.1 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales Chart for the most weeks. It had its 18th non-consecutive week at No.1. Then, it was knocked out the following week by “Film Out,” which is another BTS single.

In the same month, BTS’ first English-language single hit 1 billion views on YouTube. Within seven months and twenty-two days, it reached this many views. That made it the fastest Korean group music video to hit this milestone.

April must have been the Korean idol group’s lucky month. On April 6, “Dynamite” overtook fellow Korean artist PSY’s “Gentleman” with its 32-week streak in the Billboard’s Top 100. It is now the record-holder for the longest-charting song in the chart’s history.

Is BTS Buying YouTube Views?

“Butter” is still on a record-breaking streak. Who knows, maybe it could beat “Dynamite” in these records as well. Many competitors and western artists are accusing BTS of buying YouTube views to boost their stats, but it’s impossible to prove one way or the other.

The group also performed “Butter” in the latest Billboard Music Awards. BTS, being the global sensation that it is, won four trophies in the said event. It was awarded Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales, Top Social Artist, and Top Selling Song for “Dynamite.”

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, BTS now holds 23 official records, thanks to the release of “Butter.” It made the K-pop group one of Guinness World Records history’s most successful music groups and artists. They now stand alongside other extra-famous music artists Arianna Grande, Madonna, Mariah Carey, and the Beatles.

Without social media platforms, BTS may not have been able to accomplish this much. So thanks to them for letting the world hear the wonderful music made by BTS.
